Configuration Overview

System configuration lives in the Settings window, opened from the burger menu in the header bar (Menu → Settings). It is organised into tabs so you can jump directly to the area you want to change.

A machine in Client Mode has no Settings item — its configuration is driven by the master. See Multi-Client Setup.

Settings Tabs

TabWhat it covers
Timeline DefaultsDefaults applied to clips as you add them — still duration, the default fade type with its in / out / crossfade durations, and the drop crossfade (Auto Crossfade on Multi-File Drop, its length), which is remembered per browser rather than in the machine's config
AudioAudio interface (Windows Standard Audio Device or ASIO), ASIO device, sample rate, buffering (Debug mode), Output trim and Audio Free-Sync
StartupHow the interface opens on this machine (Open the interface, Modern window style, Start Exaplay with), and which show, composition and cue start automatically
CommunicationOSC, TCP, UDP, network control, and the multi-client toggle with Connect to another machine and, in multiclient, Follow master's startup settings
TimecodeTimecode mode (off, receive OSC / LTC / MTC / Art-Net, or master: send), framerate, global offset, chase behaviour, and the LTC audio input and output channels
SystemSystem-wide behaviour such as autosave and machine-specific options
InterfaceFont size, the welcome screen and the interface PIN lock
Decode & GPUVideo decoding and GPU options
VioThe built-in assistant (the orb in the header)

Every setting explains itself behind the ? next to its name: rest the pointer on it. Crash recovery, the Watchdog restart and the scheduled reboot are in ☰ → Auto-Heal & Watchdog, not in Settings. A few diagnosis settings (Output Buffering on the Audio tab, Test Mode on the System tab) show only with Debug mode on.

Changes are applied when you press Save settings at the bottom of the Settings window (Cancel discards them); most take effect at once after that, without a restart, unless stated otherwise. A few rows apply as soon as you change them — the interface-startup rows (how the interface opens and Modern window style on Startup, Connect to another machine and Follow master on Communication), Debug mode, Lazy media start, Test Mode, Font Size and the PIN. Settings belong to the machine, not to the show: they are stored in Documents\Exaplay3\config\ and are not part of the project file (.vpp).

Interface and Workflow Options

Several frequently used workflow settings live in the Interface, Timeline Defaults and Communication tabs:

  • Font Size (Interface) — Normal, Large or Extra Large
  • Welcome Screen (Interface) — reopen the introductory screen at any time
  • Default Fade type (Timeline Defaults) — the fade every new clip starts with (Track default out of the box), with its In, Out and Crossfade duration presets. See Fades & Transitions
  • Protect interface with PIN (Interface) — ask for a PIN code (1–8 letters/digits) before this system's interface can be used. The code is deliberately stored as readable text in the machine's config_system.json, so a forgotten PIN can always be looked up (or cleared) in that file — see PIN Lock for the full behaviour and recovery steps
  • Enable Multiclient (Communication) — enable remote system discovery, playback sync, and file copy tools

Quick Access Controls

The most common live controls remain available without opening Settings:

Volume of the active compositionTransport bar
Blank (video mute) and its fade timeHeader toolbar, the BLANK switch and the ▾ beside it (Cut out of the box; 2, 5, 10 s or Custom)
Audio muteHeader toolbar, the MUTE switch beside BLANK (it reads MUTED on red while the sound is muted)
Master volume and output channel levels☰ → Audio Mixer
