Audio Troubleshooting
No Audio Output
Step 1 — Check the audio interface and device
- Open ☰ → Settings → Audio.
- Check Audio interface (Windows Standard Audio Device or ASIO). With ASIO, check that the right ASIO Device is selected; with the Windows device, Exaplay plays on the Windows default playback device.
Step 2 — Check the clip volume
- Select the clip in the Timeline.
- In the Inspector, confirm Volume is above 0 %.
- Confirm the track is not muted (the speaker button in the track header).
Step 3 — Check the master volume
Confirm that neither the Master volume (☰ → Audio Mixer), the Output trim (☰ → Settings → Audio) nor the Composition volume fader in the Transport is at zero.
Step 4 — Check the output channels (ASIO)
With ASIO, check the First Ch of the clip, track or composition in the Inspector, and the faders in ☰ → Audio Mixer. See Audio → Output channel routing.
On Dante, a moving meter in the Audio Mixer means Exaplay plays — check the subscriptions in Dante Controller next. See Dante Audio → Troubleshooting.
Audio Dropout or Clicking
ASIO driver:
- Open the ASIO driver's own control panel (the vendor's software — the buffer size is not set in Exaplay).
- Increase the buffer size (e.g. from 128 to 256 or 512 samples).
- Reducing the buffer size lowers latency but increases the risk of dropouts. Use the smallest buffer that is stable.
CPU overload:
- Check the Performance Diagnostics panel — if CPU > 75 %, the audio thread may be starved.
- Reduce the number of decoding video streams.
- Switch video to HAP codec to free CPU cycles.
Sample rate mismatch:
- With the Windows Standard Audio Device, set Sample Rate in ☰ → Settings → Audio to the media's rate; with ASIO, set the rate in the driver's control panel.
- A clip whose rate does not match the output is named in a warning at the bottom of the Audio tab.
Audio Plays on Wrong Channels
- Select ASIO as the Audio interface — the channel selection is only available with ASIO.
- Check the First Ch of the clip, track or composition in the Inspector.
- Ensure the channel numbers in Exaplay match the physical connections on the interface, and check the faders in ☰ → Audio Mixer.
LTC Timecode Not Received
- Confirm the LTC source is physically connected to the correct audio input channel.
- In ☰ → Settings → Timecode, set Timecode Mode to Receive LTC, Linear Timecode and check the input device and Input Channel under LTC Settings.
- Verify the timecode Framerate matches the source.
- Check the audio cable for noise (LTC is sensitive to ground loops — use balanced connections).
- Open the Monitor's Timecode view: the IN card shows the LTC signal level, the channel it listens on and whether it is receiving / locked. No level means the LTC signal is not reaching Exaplay. See Monitor → Timecode IN / OUT.
See Timecode Sync → Receive: LTC.
Audio from a Specific Video Not Playing
Some video containers embed audio in formats not supported by the Exaplay audio decoder:
| Container | Common issue | Fix |
|---|---|---|
.mov HAP | HAP files can carry audio and Exaplay plays it (the built-in HAP encoder copies it); only the file's first audio stream plays | If the file has several audio streams, put the one you need first, or use a separate WAV |
.mp4 AAC > 48 kHz | High sample rate | Re-encode at 44100 or 48000 Hz |
.mov AC3 | AC3 not supported | Convert to AAC or PCM WAV |
Re-encode the audio with FFmpeg:
bash
ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 output.mov
