Outputs & Displays Troubleshooting

Blank Output Screen

Step 1 — Verify the display is detected by Windows

  1. Right-click the Windows Desktop → Display Settings.
  2. Confirm all projectors/screens are listed and set to Extend (not Mirror or Disconnect).

Step 2 — Verify the output in Exaplay

  1. Open Config → Outputs.
  2. Confirm the output is assigned to the correct Windows display number.
  3. Click Show Test Pattern — if a pattern appears on the physical display, the output hardware is working.

Step 3 — Verify playback

  1. Confirm the composition is playing (Transport bar shows and a running timecode).
  2. Confirm the composition has media on Track 1 and the clips are not all off-screen or hidden.
  3. Check the Inspector for the selected screen — verify the output assignment matches a physical display.

Wrong Resolution / Overscan / Underscan

  1. Open Config → Outputs → [Output Name].
  2. Set Resolution to match the native resolution of the display exactly.
  3. Set Refresh Rate to the display's native rate (typically 60 Hz, or 50 Hz for PAL-region broadcasts).
  4. If the image is offset or cropped, check Position (X, Y) — these must match the display's position in Windows Display Settings.

Image Appears Upside-Down or Mirrored

This is usually a hardware/cable issue (some projectors apply a flip based on ceiling/rear mode). Check:

  1. The projector's built-in Image Flip setting (Front/Rear/Ceiling).
  2. If the projector is correctly oriented physically.

Exaplay does not currently apply a software image flip — correct this at the projector or content level.

Warp Looks Wrong After Reloading Project

  1. Open Config → Outputs → [Output Name].
  2. Confirm the .vwf file path still exists and is accessible.
  3. Toggle Warp Enable off and on to force a reload.
  4. If the warp file was on a removable drive that changed letters, update the path.

Edge Blend Seam Visible

  1. Open Config → Outputs → Edge Blend.
  2. Increase Blend Width to widen the overlap region.
  3. Adjust Gamma Curve — a gentler (lower) gamma gives a softer edge.
  4. Play a mid-grey test image (128, 128, 128) and compare projector brightness at the seam — they must match for the blend to be invisible.
  5. If projector brightnesses differ, use the Luminance effect on one output to match them.

NDI Output Not Visible to Receivers

  1. Open Config → Outputs → [Output Name] → confirm NDI Output is enabled.
  2. Confirm the stream name is set and does not conflict with other NDI sources on the network.
  3. Open NDI Studio Monitor on the receiving machine and scan for sources.
  4. Check firewall: allow TCP/UDP 5960–5989 on both the engine and the receiving machine.
  5. Confirm both machines are on the same subnet.

Auto Calibration (VIOSO) Fails

  1. Confirm the calibration camera is connected and recognised by Windows.
  2. Ensure the room is dark enough — stray light from windows or other sources degrades calibration quality.
  3. Ensure the projection surfaces are matte (not glossy) — reflective surfaces cause measurement errors.
  4. Allow the projectors to warm up for at least 10 minutes before calibrating for stable brightness.
  5. Review the VIOSO AutoAlign log for specific error messages.
